Uses of Xeomin
Botulinum toxin can be toxic to the body, but it is used in the treatment of some muscle spasms or dystonias. Among them is Botulinum toxin type A found in Xeomin. So what is Xeomin and what are its uses?
1. What is Xeomin and what are its uses?
Xeomin's ingredients include:
Main active ingredient: Botulinum toxin type A;
Some inactive ingredients such as Human Albumin and sucrose
Xeomin is a prescription product. Depending on how it is used, it will have different uses. Xeomin, when injected into the salivary glands, helps treat chronic hypersalivation in adults and children aged 2 to 17 years. When injected into the muscle, Xeomin has the following effects:
Treatment of arm muscle spasms due to spastic paralysis of the upper limbs in adults;
Treatment of spasticity in the arms in children aged 2 to 17 years with spastic paralysis of the upper limbs, except in cases of cerebral palsy;
Treatment of torticollis and cervical dystonia in adults;
Treatment of blepharospasm in adults.
However, the safety of Xeomin is not known when used in children in the following cases:
Children under 2 years of age who need treatment for chronic diseases;
Children 2 years of age who need treatment for spasticity of the upper limbs;
Children under 18 years of age who need treatment for cervical dystonia or blepharospasm.
2. Some warnings when using Xeomin
Using Xeomin can cause some serious life-threatening problems. Patients should call their doctor immediately if any of the following conditions occur:
Disorders in swallowing, difficulty speaking, or difficulty breathing due to weakness of the muscles responsible for these activities. Death may occur if a patient has difficulty swallowing or breathing after treatment with Xeomin;
Patients who already have certain breathing problems may need to use their neck muscles to help them breathe, so they are at increased risk of developing more serious breathing problems while taking Xeomin;
Swallowing problems may last for several months, so a nasogastric tube may be needed to help them eat and drink. If swallowing problems become severe, food or liquid could enter the lungs and cause harm. People who already have difficulty swallowing or breathing are at highest risk of this side effect;
Toxin spread: In some cases, Botulinum toxin can affect organs far from the injection site, causing symptoms of a serious condition called Botulism with symptoms such as loss of strength and weakness of the whole body, double vision, blurred vision and drooping eyelids, hoarseness, change or loss of voice, difficulty speaking, loss of bladder control, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing.
These conditions can occur hours to weeks after the patient has received Xeomin. Therefore, they may not be safe for the patient to drive or perform other dangerous activities.
Contraindications of Xeomin:
Patients who are allergic to Xeomin or any of the ingredients in the drug;
Patients with a history of allergy to any other Botulinum toxin containing products such as Rima Botulinum Toxin B (Myobloc ®), OnaBotulinumToxinA (Botox ®) or Botoxin A (Dysport ®);
Patients with skin infections at the Xeomin injection site.
3. Things to note before using Xeomin
During the use of the drug, patients need to pay attention to the following issues:
Patients with diseases that affect muscle and nerve function (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome;
Patients with a history of side effects when using any other Botulinum toxin;
Patients with respiratory problems, such as asthma or emphysema;
Patients with a history of difficulty swallowing or aspiration pneumonia;
Patients with ptosis, eye surgery, or facial surgery;
Patients who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant because it is not clear whether Xeomin can affect the fetus;
Patients who are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, because it is not known whether Xeomin passes into breast milk;
Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription and over-the-counter medications. over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Also, patients taking Xeomin should talk to their doctor before starting any other medications.
Using Xeomin with certain other medications can cause serious side effects, so do not start any new medications without your doctor's approval. In particular, tell your doctor if you have any of the following:
Have used any other Botulinum toxin products within the past 4 months;
Have had Botulinum toxin injections such as RimabotulinumtoxinB (MYOBLOC ®), OnabotulinumtoxinA (BOTOX ®), and AbobotulinumtoxinA (DYSPORT ®) in the past;
Recent use of injectable or inhaled antibiotics;
Use of muscle relaxants, antihistamines or cold medications, and sedatives.
4. Side effects of Xeomin
Xeomin can cause serious side effects including:
Corneal damage in patients treated for blepharospasm.
